Nika found a still pool. Dark leaves lay on the water's edge. The surface held the tall trees. "Forest," Nika asked, "what makes the pool so clear?" The Forest made no sound. "When water is still, it shows what is there. When it moves, the image breaks." Nika knelt by the water. His lantern light touched the dark depth. The pool showed his face, still and whole. The lantern glowed deep and warm.
